Alajuela is the second-largest city in Costa Rica and the province that contains Juan Santamaría International Airport. a distinction that defines real estate values and lifestyle for the entire Central Valley. Live in Atenas and you are 35 minutes from the airport. Live in La Fortuna and you are 3 hours from it but within sight of Arenal volcano.
The western part of Alajuela (Atenas, Grecia, Sarchí) is the most compelling area for foreign buyers seeking the Central Valley lifestyle. Atenas in particular has become known internationally for its climate. warm but never hot, almost never cold, with enough rain to keep everything green but a dry season that delivers genuine sunshine. The town is walkable, has good services, and a thriving expat community that has been there long enough to build real infrastructure.
The northern part of the province is completely different. La Fortuna sits at the base of Arenal volcano and anchors Costa Rica's adventure tourism industry. Hot springs, zip-lining, white-water rafting, and lake views. This is the province's other identity, equally valid but drawing a very different type of buyer.
