Solar + green building
Energy independence,
designed in from day one.
Costa Rica's grid already runs on over 99% renewable energy. So the argument for solar here is not about saving the planet. It is about not depending on ICE when there are outages, not paying rising electricity rates for 25 years, and making a remote mountain lot fully habitable without waiting a year for a grid extension.
We design and integrate solar systems as part of the construction project. Roof orientation, structural reinforcement, conduit routing, and electrical panel sizing are all coordinated from the drawings. No retrofitting. No second contractor.
Why solar in Costa Rica
Grid outages are real
The 2024 El Niño caused 3-hour daily rationing. Hybrid and off-grid systems are immune.
Remote lots become viable
ICE line extensions take 12+ months to process. Off-grid solar installs in days and often beats the grid on reliability.
Lock in your energy cost
25 years of predictable generation at near-zero cost per kWh. ICE rates have risen every year.
Resale and rental premium
Solar-powered homes command higher Airbnb rates and sell faster. Especially in Guanacaste and the Pacific coast.
How it works
From photon to outlet.
A photovoltaic panel converts sunlight directly into direct current (DC) electricity. An inverter converts that DC into the alternating current (AC) that your home uses. A hybrid system adds a battery bank that stores excess daytime generation for nighttime use and grid outages. A smart controller manages the flow between panels, battery, home, and grid in real time.
Panel technology
All new residential panels are monocrystalline. Polycrystalline production ended in 2023-2024. The efficiency advantage is meaningful: 22% vs 18%, which means more power per square meter of roof.
Tier 1 certified
We use only Bloomberg New Energy Finance Tier 1 panels. The Tier 1 classification is based on manufacturer financial stability and production quality, not just panel specs. Brands include Jinko Solar, Canadian Solar, LONGi, and Q Cells.
System types
Three systems. One right choice for your property.
Hybrid System
Grid + battery
The best of both worlds. Grid connection stays active for cloudy stretches and nighttime draw, but a battery bank keeps the home running during outages. The system prioritizes solar, uses the battery as buffer, and only pulls from the grid when both run low. This is the system we recommend for most Viva projects.
Advantages
- +Works during ICE outages. Essential on the coast and in remote valleys
- +Battery charges from panels during the day, powers home at night
- +Net metering still available for excess generation
- +App monitoring and smart energy management
Considerations
- -Higher upfront cost than grid-tied
- -Batteries require replacement after 10 to 15 years
- -More components to maintain
What is included
Best for
Coastal and valley properties that want independence without full off-grid commitment
Quick comparison
Equipment quality
What makes a 25-year system different from a 7-year one.
Solar equipment quality varies enormously. The panel specs might look similar on paper, but the manufacturing consistency, the warranty backing, and the certifications for CR's specific climate (humidity, salt spray, ammonia near coastal farms) make a large difference over 25 years.
We only specify Tier 1 panels by Bloomberg NEF. The inverter and battery are selected to match the system's expected output and autonomy requirements, not the cheapest option that fits the wiring diagram.
Panels: monocrystalline Tier 1
All new panels are monocrystalline. Brands we work with include Jinko Solar, Canadian Solar, LONGi, and Q Cells. All come with 25-year linear performance warranties and IEC certifications for humidity, salt spray, and ammonia corrosion. The last two matter specifically in coastal and agricultural areas of Costa Rica.
Inverters: SMA, Fronius, Huawei
The inverter is the most failure-prone component and the one that matters most for reliability. We use SMA (German, industry standard for quality), Fronius (Austrian, excellent monitoring), and Huawei (competitive pricing, strong hybrid platform). All come with 10 to 12 year warranties.
Batteries: LiFePO4 chemistry
We specify lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries for all systems requiring storage. Safer than standard lithium-ion, tolerant of high temperatures, and rated for 3,000 to 6,000 charge cycles vs 500 to 1,000 for lead-acid. Brands include BYD, Pylontech, and Dyness.
Mounting: marine-grade aluminum
All mounting systems use anodized or marine-grade aluminum profiles with stainless steel fasteners. For coastal properties within 5 km of the ocean, we specify enhanced corrosion-resistant mounting rated for salt spray exposure. Roof attachment is engineered for the local wind load.
Premium package
The Ecohouse.
A home that generates its own electricity, heats its own water, and runs its irrigation on solar energy. Near-zero energy cost from day one. Designed as a complete system in the construction project, not as upgrades added later.
The Ecohouse package is the right choice for mountain properties where energy independence is not a preference but a necessity, and for clients who want a property that positions itself meaningfully in the Costa Rica vacation rental market.

Solar photovoltaic
Hybrid or off-grid system designed from the construction plans. Roof orientation and pitch optimized for maximum generation.
Solar thermal
Rooftop solar collectors heat domestic hot water and pool water passively. Eliminates the water heater from the electricity bill.
Solar irrigation pump
A dedicated solar pump powers the garden irrigation system without grid electricity. Combined with the smart irrigation controller.
Rainwater collection
Roof catchment feeds a storage tank for garden irrigation and optional grey water use. Especially valuable in dry season Guanacaste.
LED throughout
All lighting specified as LED from the architectural plans. Typical savings of 80% vs standard bulbs, which compounds on the battery sizing.
Smart energy management
A single controller monitors generation, consumption, battery state, and weather forecast. Accessible from your phone from anywhere.
