Overview

Cartago is where Costa Rica began. It was the colonial capital for over 300 years before the capital moved to San José in 1823. That history is visible in the province. in the Basílica de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles (the most important religious site in Costa Rica), in the ruins of the old colonial church destroyed by the 1910 earthquake, and in an agricultural tradition that continues with some of the most productive soils in the country.

The Orosi Valley is one of the most beautiful landscapes in Costa Rica. Green volcanic hillsides, a colonial church from 1743, the Cachi reservoir, coffee farms, and hot springs all concentrated in one accessible valley. Buyers who discover Orosi typically want to build there immediately. the aesthetic is extraordinary and the prices reflect the fact that it has not yet been discovered by the international market the way Nosara or Escazú have.

Turrialba at the eastern end of the province is a different world entirely. adventure sports capital of Costa Rica. The Pacuare River (ranked among the best white-water rivers in the world) runs through here, and the CATIE agricultural research center gives the town an international academic dimension.

Building in Cartago

What the terrain and climate mean for construction.

Soil and foundation

Exceptional volcanic soils. the richest in the Central Valley. Foundation conditions generally good. Moisture management important due to cloud forest influence near higher elevations.

Solar energy

Highland solar works well on south-facing slopes. Cloud cover near Irazú reduces output in some areas. Solar thermal water heating very effective and recommended. Grid-tied sufficient for most properties.

Landscape and garden

Extraordinary growing conditions. Strawberries, ornamental flowers, vegetables, coffee, macadamia. all thrive. Cooler temperatures enable some temperate species not possible at lower altitudes. Orchids and bromeliads particularly suited to this climate.

Key considerations

Cooler temperatures mean heating may be desired in some homes. thermal mass in construction and passive solar design are valuable here. Seismic compliance required. Irazú's occasional ash emission is a consideration for exterior finishes and garden design.
